Dear {{$USER_FIRST$}},

As some of you may have noticed, our A-News is undergoing a bit of a "makeover," and I hope you like the additions to the format.  We hope to include an alumnae spotlight, faculty musings, and student stories on a regular basis.  Let us know what or who is of interest to you, as your comments will help to shape future editions.

Alumnae Spotlight

Tracy SpotlightOne of the few upsides of this economic downturn is that if you have lost your job you know you are not alone.  One alumna in this situation is Tracy Anello ’92, who is making lemonade out of the lemons this economy has given her.

After working for over five years at Manpower Global Headquarters in various roles, most recently managing a team of writers as Manager of Proposals, Tracy’s position was eliminated after a wave of downsizing last December.  Fortunately she was afforded an opportunity for Outplacement services through Manpower subsidiary Right Management, which helped her to understand the current job market and tackle it with a new set of objectives.  Tracy’s main focus has been networking, and she turns to sites such as Linkedin, as well as her own list of contacts, to see who she knows that could refer or recommend her for a posted job. When asked what advice she would give others who've been downsized she replied, “Don’t panic!  Take time to get to know who you are and what you really want to do – a job loss may be a gift of time to STOP and evaluate.  Have a plan and work the plan every day!  Network, network, network...and when you’re done, network some more!”

Campus Happenings
Homecoming 2009
Over 300 alumnae, students, faculty/staff, and family & friends gathered on campus for Homecoming Weekend, held October 8-11, 2009. As part of the Saturday evening festivities, faculty that have taught at the College for 20 or 25 years were honored at a special social hour. The following are a few reflections from these professors on their teaching experiences at Alverno.

“Once when I was teaching AH 150, when I first got here, a student asked me why everything we taught had to be so sad and depressing. Thinking back on the class I had to admit that there were a lot of tear-jerkers in there. The next semester I replaced one of the books with one that was more uplifting, and I have always thought about that comment in putting together readings for a course. I'm glad for that student's insightful honesty!”

“In the early 1990's I had a beginning technology course.  I got everyone on the computers in what was then N 080 and we were starting to work -- when one student (non-traditional), raised her hand and said she was having difficulties.  I went over to her to help her --- she said her problem was -- the "foot pedal" cord was not long enough.  She was referring to the mouse -- a relatively new
input device!”

“Always exciting to work with MGT 400 Small Business students as they develop their new business plans. It is even more exciting when students implement their plans. I recently learned that alum Nicole Wranik started her business, "Mosquito John, LLC" (mosquitojohnllc@yahoo.com) specializing in bug control for residential households with an emphasis on mosquito control.”
