Holocaust Survivor to Speak at Alverno
Since 2002, Alverno College has held annual remembrance services for Yom HaShoah, established as a memorial day for the Holocaust. This year’s service will feature Holocaust survivor Tauba Biterman, and will be held in the TLTC Conference Center at noon on Wednesday, April 28th. Biterman was first hidden, then passed as a German from the Black Forest. She survived by staying on the move, working when she could get work, and staying alert to the suspicions and accusations of Poles and Ukrainians who “always looked for Jews and hunted us out.” Her many harrowing experiences included having guns held to her head to coerce her into confessing that she was a Jew. “I was very strong and life was precious. I didn’t want to die from a bullet.”
This event is free and open to the public, and no R.S.V.P. is necessary. Contact Sue DaBaco at sue.dabaco@alverno.edu with any questions.

Athletics Update: Three Inferno basketball players honored by Northern Athletics Conference
The Northern Athletics Conference announced the awards for the 2009-10 women's basketball season and three Alverno College student-athletes represented the Inferno. Junior point guard Gabby Allen was named to the All-Conference First Team, senior guard Lisa Sorgi was named to the All-Conference Second Team and All-Sportsmanship Team and freshman center Rachel Diedrich was named to the All-Freshman Team.
The Inferno finished the 2009-10 campaign with the best season in school history at 13-13. Their 11-7 conference record put them in a tie for second place in the NAC South Division, earning their first NAC tournament appearance where they lost in overtime to eventual champion Lakeland College in the quarterfinals.
"They had a great season," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "For Gabby to be the first player in the history of our program to be voted to the first team is quite an honor, but really well deserved. There were times this season that she just put us on her back and carried us. Gabby does a lot for us on the floor--she is our point guard, one of our top defenders and leading scorer. I couldn't be more proud of how far she has come. I couldn't be happier to have her back next year and see how much further she can grow."
