“Enthusiastic and involved” are two words that only begin to describe the force of nature known as alumna Sally Bjorkman '83. A spirited volunteer, her alumnae involvement with Alverno includes more than 20 years working as a volunteer assessor and participating in various alumnae committees, including work as a past president of the Alumnae Association. Today her mission is to encourage others to share of themselves and get involved.
Volunteering has always been important to Sally, but it was retirement in 2004 that put that interest into overdrive. Her current passion is the Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap, or MHBT, dance competition that occurs in Milwaukee in May. The Ballroom event involves local 5th and 6th graders from primarily low income schools in Milwaukee's central city. Milwaukee's Danceworks instructors provide tap and ballroom instruction twice a week for ten weeks, which lead up to a program-wide exhibition and competition at the Bradley Center.
The classes work to improve the kids’ attendance, academic performance, grades and behavior. They also work to teach problem solving and communication skills, and to instill the values of education and lifelong learning. Sound familiar?

Remembering Sister Christine Trimberger
We wish to inform you that we have lost a valued colleague and friend of Alverno College. On Friday, January 15, 2010, Sister Christine Trimberger passed away at Sacred Heart Convent Center in Milwaukee. S. Christine was a Professor Emerita and was active on campus from August 1, 1948 until June 2005. Many faculty and colleagues on campus knew her as a beloved teacher and colleague who taught Philosophy from 1948 through Spring 1997, as well as acting as Chair of the Arts and Humanities for many years. From 1997 until June 2005 she worked in the Assessment Center. S. Christine was employed a total of 56.5 years at Alverno College. Her impact on our curriculum and college is great, as she was the lead in hiring many faculty members still here today. We will miss her.

7:00 p.m., The Mug (basement of Austin Hall)
Mark your calendars now for the 3rd annual Miss Alverno contest, held Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. in the Mug (basement of Austin Hall). The Miss Alverno event provides students with the opportunity to use the eight Alverno abilities in a setting outside of the classroom. Miss Alverno assists both the participants and audience members to better understand pageants, and in turn detracts from the stereotypes associated with pageants. Each contestant will perform and speak in front of a crowd, giving her the chance to gain confidence in herself, and also to support an organization important to her.
Contestants will participate in five categories: Casual Wear (getting to know the contestant), Talent (showing off their talent), Formal Wear (dressing for the occasion), Interview (demonstrating their interviewing skills based on their platform), and Candidate’s Choice (a woman of influence throughout the decades).
Come support current students as they compete for the 2010-11 Miss Alverno title!
