Dear Alverno Alumnae,

Happy New Year from the Alumnae Office!

As we begin 2010, the Administrative Committee of the Alverno Alumnae Association Board would like to invite you to submit nominations for new members. (Self-nominations are welcome.)  The Alumnae Association Board serves as an advisory group to the director of alumnae relations, working with the director to implement the strategic goals of the College and the Association.  The group also works to promote the Association through involvement on committees and by supporting its activities.  The term is three years with the option of reappointment for three additional years with the approval of the Alverno College Alumnae Board.

Class of 55Class of 1955 members bring friends to Alverno Holiday Concert and Tea
For years, several classmates from the class of 1955 have been meeting every month.  This year the group invited additional friends to their December gathering to enjoy Alverno’s annual holiday concert and tea.

Telesis Wants You!
We’re seeking alums who have knowledge and skills to share through the Telesis Program.  Telesis provides a wide range of non-credit programs and workshops to the community while following the Alverno College Wellness Model (Physical, Spiritual, Intellectual, Career, Environmental, Social and Emotional).  We are interested in program proposals that reflect all of these seven elements, however, we are specifically planning to expand offerings in the area of environmental. 

If you have an idea you’d like to propose, contact Vanessa O’Neil via email at vanessa.oneil@alverno.edu.  For Summer 2010, the deadline for proposals is Friday, January 22nd and for Fall 2010, the deadline is Friday, February 5th.  We are also interested in any proposals for the afternoon of October 9th, during our annual Homecoming Weekend Celebration. 

Scholarship Information
Alverno offers competitive scholarships of which we would like to make you aware.  Please encourage high school senior women who you may know are planning on attending weekday college at Alverno in the fall to apply.  More information, along with application forms, can be found on the Financial Aid section of our web site.  Hard copies are also available from the Admissions Office.

Eleanor Roosevelt Community Service Scholarship
Four-year, full-tuition scholarship awarded to a first-year (freshman) student who has demonstrated excellence in academics and commitment to community service.  Application deadline is March 15.

Peck Scholar Program:  Excellence in Leadership and Community Service
Four-year, full-tuition scholarship awarded to a first-year (freshman) student who has demonstrated a strong commitment to community service and volunteer activities.  Application deadline is March 15.

Alverno Scholars of Wisconsin (ASW) Scholarship
Four-year academic scholarship ($13,500 year) awarded to one graduating high school senior woman from each county in Wisconsin.  Application deadline is March 15.

Governor Doyle Visits Alverno
In November, Governor Jim Doyle visited Alverno to discuss the College’s innovative teacher programs and the importance of developing great teachers for the future.  The visit coincided with the national “Race to the Top” initiative led by President Obama and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.  Click here to read the press release and to view the YouTube video on a portion of Governor Doyle’s remarks.

Campus Happenings
Leadership for 21st Century Learning
On Tuesday, March 2, Alverno is hosting a special conference on Leadership for 21st Century Learning, focused on the roles of both teachers and administrators.  All alums, especially those of the Alverno Master of Arts program, are invited to join us for this event.  Be sure to take advantage of the $5 discount for alums.

Explore the important role teacher and administrative leadership plays in forming and growing professional communities designed to maximize 21st Century learning and achievement.  Keynote speaker, Dr. Reeves will explain why we cannot use a 20th Century education model to help students become college or career ready in today's society.
The strands of practitioner breakout sessions will focus on:

  • Building Strong Literacy Skills
  • Fostering Effective Leadership
  • Sustaining Effective Learning Communities

Summer Shakespeare Returns to Milwaukee
Shakespeare in the Park will present The Tempest in Alverno’s Alumnae Courtyard June 18-20th and June 24-27th.  Veteran actor Jim Pickering has signed on to play the role of Prospero.  Best of all, the performances will be free. Ron Fry, who, along with his wife Susan, has spent the last 19 years running Bristol Renaissance Fair, will be directing the production.  The festival is a collaboration between Ron and Susan Fry, Tom Reed, and M.L. Cogar.  Tom Reed and M.L. Cogar are both instructors at Alverno College, and Tom was one of the producer’s of Henry V last spring at Marquette’s Helfaer Theatre.

Optimist Theatre will be presenting a fundraiser, Brave New World, for Milwaukee Shakespeare in the Park on January 30th at Alverno’s Teaching, Learning and Technology Center.  Admission is $35 per person, and all proceeds go to support Shakespeare in the Park. Alumnae Adventure in the Rainforest
Informational Meeting
Thursday, January 21st

Alverno College is excited to offer an eco-adventure for alumnae to the rainforests of Costa Rica, May 28th – June 6th, 2010.  Open to graduates of any program, this 10-day, all-inclusive trip will introduce participants to the people, history and habitats of Costa Rica.  Approximate cost of the trip is $3,000, and includes all travel, meals, tours and accommodation.  Space is limited. Faculty guides for the trip include Lynn Kuhlman, manager of residence operations (414-382-6372, lynn.kuhlman@alverno.edu), and Jill Newton Moore, professor, Professional Communication (414-382-6255, jill.moore@alverno.edu).

Career Search Basics for Alumnae
Finding a new career in today’s challenging economic times and ever changing job scene can seem overwhelming.  Our 3-part series designed for alumnae focuses on the new trends and approaches in contemporary job seeking.  Come to one, two, or all three sessions and develop confidence in your job search skills. All sessions are offered from 6 – 8 p.m. and will be presented by the staff of the Alverno College Career Education Center. Space is limited!

The annual Etiquette Dinner offers students an opportunity to learn the finer points of dining etiquette as they network with members of the College community. Each table is hosted by Alverno alumnae and/or a member of the College staff or faculty. This allows students the opportunity to connect with others in their prospective field. Special request for Nursing Alums: this year we have a large number of nursing students graduating.
