Softball Update: Three Alverno Softball Players Receive Postseason NAC Honors
The Northern Athletics Conference announced the awards for the 2010 softball season and three Alverno College student-athletes represented the Inferno. Senior pitcher Jessica Goetz was a First Team All-NAC selection while freshman catcher Stef Wilmore earned a spot on the All-Freshman team and junior left fielder Andrea Derrick was chosen to represent Alverno on the All-Sportsmanship team.
"I think it makes for a great finish to the year to have Jessi and Stef earn all-conference awards," said Alverno head coach Kristin Kosobucki. "Both worked very hard, and especially for Jess to make first team her senior year is a great goal for her to have achieved and a great way to finish her career."
Goetz concludes a stellar four-year career as one of Alverno's most decorated softball student-athletes, leaving her mark on the record books in numerous places. The right-hander holds the all-time record for strikeouts with 561 total and finished tenth in the nation with 237 strikeouts in 2010. A Second Team All-NAC member in 2008, Goetz also proved her ability to go the distance in the circle, throwing a league-leading 215.1 innings in 39 appearances this season all while managing to keep her ERA down to 3.67. She also earned the NAC Pitcher of the Week award during the first week of this season highlighted by her third career shutout victory with 14 punch-outs.
Wilmore enjoyed a solid season behind the plate in her first year playing at the collegiate level, leading the conference in runners picked off with six successful throw-outs as well as claiming the top spot in putouts with 267. She also boasted a team-best fielding percentage (.990), good for seventh-best in the NAC, committing just three errors while starting all 40 of the Inferno's games.
In her second season with the Inferno, Derrick more than doubled her batting productivity from 2009, racking up 19 hits with one double and 11 RBI while batting and improved .174. She also tied for the top spot in the NAC in hit by pitch, taking five errant balls for free bases.
