April 2013 Issue

Dear ,

Happy spring! Alumnae, you asked and we listened! Tuesday morning we held our fourth Networking Breakfast. We had 38 alums come out at 7:30 a.m., and Alverno School of Business Professor Patricia Jensen '71 was our guest speaker. It was awesome to see and hear the energy in the room when a group of Alverno women gather. The connections being made and the relationship building is exactly what we hoped to offer. Each month we get a few more as we move around the city and offer interesting, current topics. If you haven't attended, I encourage you to join us. If you have a suggestion for a venue, topic or speaker, send it my way. Below you will see the schedule for next three months. I hope to see you at a Networking Breakfast soon!

Warm regards,
Kim Muench '89
Assistant Director of Alumnae Relations

Graduation Help Needed
Would you like to help us at commencement? Would you like to watch the graduates, remember your graduation and smile at those fond memories? You can help us by volunteering to usher for the undergraduate ceremony. If you would like to usher for this May's Commencement, email me at virginia.wagner@alverno.edu. It's not much of a commitment.  Graduation is on Saturday, May 18th. You would need to be at Alverno by 12:30 p.m., and you would be finished ushering by 4 p.m. Thank you, as always, for considering this and for your generous gift of time.

aluminspotlight
Alverno is thrilled to announce the recent launch of Alverno Magazine Online, alverno.edu/magazine, to supplement the College's two annual print editions.

Designed with the end-user in mind, the online magazine provides an attractive way to offer new content on a more consistent basis. To this end, the online magazine offers fresh new content, providing additional opportunities to read about fascinating students, innovative faculty and compelling alumnae. Plus, every article will be easy to share with friends, coworkers and even prospective students via email and Facebook.

Readers will also have an option to "Subscribe" to Alverno Magazine Online. The subscribe feature ensures you'll be among the first to read about "what's new" at Alverno because you'll receive an email alert when a new story posts.

This month's Alumnae Spotlight story is from the online magazine.

AS-VarelaHumble by nature, Maria Varela '61 is unlikely to characterize herself as extraordinary. Yet, she is an amazing woman who credits her early involvement with Young Christian Students (YCS) as a springboard into her career as community activist and organizer. She received a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1990 for her work promoting culturally sustainable development in poor rural communities, and was one of the 1,000 PeaceWomen who collectively were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005. No doubt, Varela is extraordinary. She's also an Alverno alumna who graduated with a degree in Speech. Click here to read more.

  • Talent
  • Dressing for the occasion (formal wear)
  • Interview (business attire)

Gendered Violence:
Connecting Local Violence to Global Issues

TONIGHT, April 11, 2013
6:00-8:00 p.m.
Sister Joel Read Center
Explore issues of gender and violence, whether personal, political, or global. Does local violence represent social and political attitudes that can be linked to global practices? This interactive discussion with key community members will explore connections between local violence like domestic assault, gun and gender based violence, and global violence such as sex trafficking, honor killing or rape as an instrument of warfare. We will also discuss movements against gendered violence as an impetus for social reform and identify additional avenues for addressing it. Guest panelists include: Paulina de Haan, Regional Coordinator for Mayors Against Illegal Guns; Michael Munson, Executive Director of FORGE; Carmen Pitre, Executive Director at Sojourner Family Peace Center; and Dr. Sebastian Ssempijja, Co-Founder and Clinical Director at the Sebastian Family Psychology Practice, LLC. Moderator will be Amy Shapiro, Co-Director, Women's and Gender Studies Program. A Resource Fair with representatives from area organizations will be available from 5:30–8:30 p.m. Sponsored by Alverno College School of Arts and Sciences and Alverno College Research Center for Women and Girls. Alverno Forum series is free and open to the public. Details at www.alverno.edu/forum.

changing MindsTHE BIG READ: Changing Minds, by Howard Gardner
How do people become set in a certain way of thinking? And what does it take to change a perspective? Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner challenges traditional thinking and offers insights into the phenomenon of changing minds. He draws on decades of cognitive research to show mind change not as a sudden "epiphany" but as a gradual process that can be actively and powerfully influenced.

Gardner will be the recipient of the first annual Sister Joel Read Distinguished Educator Award on April 18. The entire Alverno community is participating in a "Big Read" of Gardner's book, Changing Minds: The Art and Science of Changing Our Own and Other People's Minds. Small group discussions and classroom explorations will culminate in a free open conversation with Gardner from 2:00–4:00 p.m. on April 18th in Wehr Auditorium, Christopher Hall. We hope you will join us!

For more information on the Big Read activities and resources, visit the Big Read wiki at www.bigread2013.pbworks.com or contact Laura Aaron Sear in the Institute for Educational Outreach at 414-382-6177 or laura.sear@alverno.edu.
