Happy spring! Alumnae, you asked and we listened! Tuesday morning we held our fourth Networking Breakfast. We had 38 alums come out at 7:30 a.m., and Alverno School of Business Professor Patricia Jensen '71 was our guest speaker. It was awesome to see and hear the energy in the room when a group of Alverno women gather. The connections being made and the relationship building is exactly what we hoped to offer. Each month we get a few more as we move around the city and offer interesting, current topics. If you haven't attended, I encourage you to join us. If you have a suggestion for a venue, topic or speaker, send it my way. Below you will see the schedule for next three months. I hope to see you at a Networking Breakfast soon!

Designed with the end-user in mind, the online magazine provides an attractive way to offer new content on a more consistent basis. To this end, the online magazine offers fresh new content, providing additional opportunities to read about fascinating students, innovative faculty and compelling alumnae. Plus, every article will be easy to share with friends, coworkers and even prospective students via email and Facebook.
Readers will also have an option to "Subscribe" to Alverno Magazine Online. The subscribe feature ensures you'll be among the first to read about "what's new" at Alverno because you'll receive an email alert when a new story posts.
This month's Alumnae Spotlight story is from the online magazine.
Humble by nature, Maria Varela '61 is unlikely to characterize herself as extraordinary. Yet, she is an amazing woman who credits her early involvement with Young Christian Students (YCS) as a springboard into her career as community activist and organizer. She received a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1990 for her work promoting culturally sustainable development in poor rural communities, and was one of the 1,000 PeaceWomen who collectively were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005. No doubt, Varela is extraordinary. She's also an Alverno alumna who graduated with a degree in Speech. Click here to read more.
Miss Alverno is not your stereotypical beauty pageant; in fact it is not a beauty pageant at all! This annual event gives Alverno students the opportunity to show their growth in the Alverno Abilities and their involvement in the college. Through an essay, interview, and talent performance, the participants will show how they are excelling in the abilities, whether through school involvement, educational growth, or community involvement, and how they are using these abilities to prepare to become active Alverno alumnae.Contestants will participate in five categories:
Miss Alverno will be held in the Mug on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. Please join us! The event is completely free to all participants and audience members.

Join fellow Alverno alumnae for a delicious and educational "Churches & Chocolates" tour through the City of Steeples - Milwaukee. In between delicious stops at two local chocolatiers for behind-the-scenes insight, shopping and sampling, we visit three local churches, such as St. James Episcopal, Grace Lutheran, and St. Joseph's Chapel, to learn about the history and architecture of these unique places of worship. Each church includes a docent led tour. Tour includes chocolate treats, shopping time, docent led church tours, a guided city tour via bus, plus donations are provided to each church.
Watch for information on the Twin Cities in June and Chicago in July.

THE BIG READ: Changing Minds, by Howard Gardner

The entire Alverno community is participating in a "Big Read" of Gardner's book, Changing Minds: The Art and Science of Changing Our Own and Other People's Minds. We hope you will join us!

A Message from Admissions
Know a promising young woman who would benefit from an Alverno education like you had?
The Alverno Wellness Committee is sponsoring a team for the UPAF Ride for the Arts on Sunday, June 2nd, and we want you to join us! Families and friends of Alverno Alums are welcome to ride, too. Routes vary in distance – 5, 12, 25, 50 or 75 miles - choose the best one for you. After the Ride, participants can enjoy the Finish Line Party on the Summerfest Grounds. The party is free, includes live entertainment and is lots of fun for all. Participating in the Ride is a great way to support art groups in our community while promoting your own health and well-being.
How do I register?
Team registration ends May 1. The Wellness Committee will distribute t-shirts and rider packets on campus on May 15th and 16th. Questions? Contact Julie Borgealt at 414-382-6435 or by email at email@example.com.
