Dear ,

Happy New Year! The new year is a time of action, and in this spirit, we have two ways you can assist us to serve Alverno and our students in 2013. We ask for your help by reading the letter below from the Advocacy/Lobbying Task Force regarding student aid and deciding how you might help, and by taking the following alumnae survey. By taking action you will help current and fellow students. Thank you for all you do!

Mary Frieseke '93,'10
Director of Alumnae Relations
Kim Muench '89
Assistant Director of Alumnae Relations

Dear Alumnae,
As you know from all the media coverage over deficit concerns, the federal and state governments are once again seriously considering deep cuts in student aid programs. The current budgetary situation and political climate have created a bleak outlook for lower-income students pursuing their dream of a college degree. Since this situation impacts so many of our students, we are asking for your help with these specific calls to action:

1.       Sign Power of Financial Aid Petition.  Please visit and sign the Power of Financial Aid Petition to let state representatives know you want financial aid dollars protected. Encourage those in your circle of influence (family, friends, etc.) to sign the petition.

2.       Register for WAICU Students’ Day.  Please visit and register to travel to Madison on Wednesday, February 27, for WAICU Students' Day.  Once you register, we will provide more details and training.

3.      Share on social media by posting a message on Facebook or Linked In (or use this sample message: Building a stronger Wisconsin economy means having a better-educated workforce. Protect the power of financial aid:

This is a critical issue for the Alverno College community.  Almost half of our undergraduate students receive state grant assistance, amounting to nearly $3 million. We are deeply concerned that if these financial assistance programs are decreased, many of our students will not be able to afford their college education.

Thank you for all you do for Alverno and for helping to ensure the educational dreams of our students are fulfilled through the Power of Financial Aid.

Greetings Alumnae!

Perhaps you've seen elements of our recent, and still ongoing, marketing campaign. With the headline, "Invest in You," we highlight why an Alverno College education begins a lifelong learning process that will benefit graduates personally and professionally over the course of their careers and throughout their lives. Please take a few minutes to complete this brief (seven question) survey to help us better understand what an Alverno education means to you.

Thank you.

Congratulations, Graduates!
Forty-seven Master's candidates and 167 undergraduates graduated on December 14 and 15, 2012. The Alumnae Office would like to extend our most sincere congratulations to these newest Alverno alums!

Career Corner

CAREER CORNER: Beyond job boards
One of the most common errors that job seekers today make is relying too heavily on job boards. Many jobs are never advertised on sites like, so job seekers should only spend a small amount of their time (10-20%) on these sites. Instead, your time will be better spent on relationship-building activities (i.e. networking), such as participating in professional associations and events, or volunteering. Make sure you know these 5 other ways to learn about job opportunities.
