March 2013 Issue

Dear ,

Ms. Alverno logoMy name is Sarah Ward. I am an Alverno Senior majoring in History for Secondary Education. When I'm not in class, I work in the Alumnae Office as the Alumnae in Training Program Coordinator. The Alumnae in Training program facilitates interaction between students and alumnae, with our goal to enhance the student experience by providing opportunities that strengthen their lifelong affiliation and loyalty to Alverno. Miss Alverno is just one of many campus events we organize to connect students and alumnae. Miss Alverno is a pageant-style event which provides students with the opportunity to apply their Alverno abilities in a setting outside of the classroom. Over the past four years the Miss Alverno competition has grown to be a vital part of the Alverno experience. Join us on Wednesday, April 24th from 7:00-10:00 p.m. in the Mug Coffeehouse to be a part of this one-of-a-kind event! To learn more about Miss Alverno, click here.

Warm regards,
Sarah Ward
Alumnae in Training Program Coordinator

Alverno is thrilled to announce the recent launch of Alverno Magazine Online, alverno.edu/magazine, to supplement the College's two annual print editions.

Designed with the end-user in mind, the online magazine provides an attractive way to offer new content on a more consistent basis. To this end, the online magazine offers fresh new content, providing additional opportunities to read about fascinating students, innovative faculty and compelling alumnae. Plus, every article will be easy to share with friends, coworkers and even prospective students via email and Facebook.

Readers will also have an option to "Subscribe" to Alverno Magazine Online. The subscribe feature ensures you'll be among the first to read about "what's new" at Alverno because you'll receive an email alert when a new story posts.

Melany GonzalezThis month's Alumnae Spotlight story is from the online magazine. The second youngest of five children, Melany Gonzalez '02 always knew she wanted a career where she could work with and help people. So, it was no surprise when – during her junior year of high school at Milwaukee Trade & Tech – she confirmed her desire to become a nurse.

"It seemed like a really good, completely natural fit," explained Melany. "I always enjoyed science and especially biology, plus I could help people and that was really important to me."

After sharing the news with her maternal grandfather, Arnold Denny, he encouraged her to investigate Alverno's nursing program. Click here to read the entire story in the online magazine.

Alverno Marketing Piece Recognized in National Competition
The latest edition of the Alverno College President's Report, "Inspired by Legacy," was among the winners in the 28th Annual Educational Advertising Awards, sponsored by Higher Education Marketing Report. This year, more than 3,000 entries were received from colleges and universities representing all 50 states, as well as several foreign countries.

Alverno College received Bronze recognition in the Annual Report category, joined by the likes of California Institute of Technology, Gold; University of Bridgeport, Silver; and three Merit winners: Union University, The Ohio State University at Newark and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Unlike many competing colleges, Alverno's President's Report is produced entirely in-house with both copy development and design lay-out handled by the Alverno College Marketing department. Visit alverno.edu/presidentsreport to view an online version of the annual report.

changing MindsThe Big Read: Changing Minds, by Howard Gardner
How do people become set in a certain way of thinking? And what does it take to change a perspective? Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner challenges traditional thinking and offers insights into the phenomenon of changing minds. He draws on decades of cognitive research to show mind change not as a sudden "epiphany" but as a gradual process that can be actively and powerfully influenced.

Gardner will be the recipient of the first annual Sister Joel Read Distinguished Educator Award on April 18th. The entire Alverno community is encouraged to participate in a "Big Read" of Gardner's book, Changing Minds: The Art and Science of Changing Our Own and Other People's Minds. Small group discussions and classroom explorations will culminate in a free open conversation with Gardner from 2:00–4:00 p.m. on April 18 in Wehr Auditorium, Christopher Hall.

Start assembling your own study group or e-discussion! For more information on the Big Read activities and resources, visit the Big Read wiki at www.bigread2013.pbworks.com or contact Laura Aaron Sear in the Institute for Educational Outreach at 414-382-6177 or laura.sear@alverno.edu.

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO WOULD BE MBA MATERIAL?
Faculty and staff are hard at work recruiting new students to the School of Business Program. Faculty members Rebecca Toledo, Craig Miller and Jim Henderson have begun an outreach to area high schools, and MBA Program Director Patricia Jensen and her team have been contacting prospective MBA students. If you know of someone who might benefit from an Alverno education that is interested in business, suggest to them that they contact the Admissions office or call the School of Business at (414) 382-6500.

Connecting Local Violence to Global Issues

Thursday, April 11, 2013
6:00-8:00 p.m.
Sister Joel Read Center
Explore issues of gender and violence, whether personal, political, or global. Does local violence represent social and political attitudes that can be linked to global practices? This interactive discussion with key community members will explore connections between local violence like domestic assault, gun and gender based violence, and global violence such as sex trafficking, honor killing or rape as an instrument of warfare.  We will also discuss movements against gendered violence as an impetus for social reform and identify additional avenues for addressing it. Sponsored by Alverno College School of Arts and Sciences and Alverno College Research Center for Women and Girls.
