My name is Sarah Ward. I am an Alverno Senior majoring in History for Secondary Education. When I'm not in class, I work in the Alumnae Office as the Alumnae in Training Program Coordinator. The Alumnae in Training program facilitates interaction between students and alumnae, with our goal to enhance the student experience by providing opportunities that strengthen their lifelong affiliation and loyalty to Alverno. Miss Alverno is just one of many campus events we organize to connect students and alumnae. Miss Alverno is a pageant-style event which provides students with the opportunity to apply their Alverno abilities in a setting outside of the classroom. Over the past four years the Miss Alverno competition has grown to be a vital part of the Alverno experience. Join us on Wednesday, April 24th from 7:00-10:00 p.m. in the Mug Coffeehouse to be a part of this one-of-a-kind event! To learn more about Miss Alverno, click here.
Designed with the end-user in mind, the online magazine provides an attractive way to offer new content on a more consistent basis. To this end, the online magazine offers fresh new content, providing additional opportunities to read about fascinating students, innovative faculty and compelling alumnae. Plus, every article will be easy to share with friends, coworkers and even prospective students via email and Facebook.
Readers will also have an option to "Subscribe" to Alverno Magazine Online. The subscribe feature ensures you'll be among the first to read about "what's new" at Alverno because you'll receive an email alert when a new story posts.
This month's Alumnae Spotlight story is from the online magazine. The second youngest of five children, Melany Gonzalez '02 always knew she wanted a career where she could work with and help people. So, it was no surprise when – during her junior year of high school at Milwaukee Trade & Tech – she confirmed her desire to become a nurse.
"It seemed like a really good, completely natural fit," explained Melany. "I always enjoyed science and especially biology, plus I could help people and that was really important to me."
After sharing the news with her maternal grandfather, Arnold Denny, he encouraged her to investigate Alverno's nursing program. Click here to read the entire story in the online magazine.

Alverno Marketing Piece Recognized in National Competition
Alverno College received Bronze recognition in the Annual Report category, joined by the likes of California Institute of Technology, Gold; University of Bridgeport, Silver; and three Merit winners: Union University, The Ohio State University at Newark and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Unlike many competing colleges, Alverno's President's Report is produced entirely in-house with both copy development and design lay-out handled by the Alverno College Marketing department. Visit alverno.edu/presidentsreport to view an online version of the annual report.
The Big Read: Changing Minds, by Howard Gardner
Gardner will be the recipient of the first annual Sister Joel Read Distinguished Educator Award on April 18th. The entire Alverno community is encouraged to participate in a "Big Read" of Gardner's book, Changing Minds: The Art and Science of Changing Our Own and Other People's Minds. Small group discussions and classroom explorations will culminate in a free open conversation with Gardner from 2:00–4:00 p.m. on April 18 in Wehr Auditorium, Christopher Hall.
Start assembling your own study group or e-discussion! For more information on the Big Read activities and resources, visit the Big Read wiki at www.bigread2013.pbworks.com or contact Laura Aaron Sear in the Institute for Educational Outreach at 414-382-6177 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
