MUSIC THERAPY is the scientific application of the art of music to accomplish specific treatment objectives. The therapist uses music to facilitate changes in behavior and brain function for the ultimate goal of promoting health and wellness. Music therapists are part of multidisciplinary teams that serve the needs of varied populations in many areas including medical and psychiatric hospitals, hospice, schools, clinics and extended health care settings.

CAREER OPTIONS

  • Establish a private practice for contractual work with individuals and institutions
  • Provide music therapy services in public schools
  • Work in geriatric and long term care facilities
  • Develop wellness and prevention programs for businesses
  • Work in community health agencies such as medical centers, psychiatric clinics, and residential treatment centers

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

While studying music therapy at Alverno you can receive the Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy, or the Music Therapy Equivalency. The bachelor’s degree is a four year program plus internship. If you have a degree in another area of study, we offer the Equivalency option which allows you to focus on specific courses required to become a Board Certified music therapist. Alverno’s highly regarded ability-based curriculum allows you to integrate all aspects of your education to prepare you to work in this profession. Our location in an urban setting allows access to diverse clinical settings where you will work under the direct supervision of board certified music therapists in various areas of health care. The extensive experiences you have during undergraduate coursework will assist you in securing a top internship position and begin to build a strong resume for future job opportunities.
