What I do: Project Analyst (Project Management), Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in
Milwaukee, WI
I work in the Project Management Office for IT. I oversee projects in Information Technology.
How I got my job: Began as an intern offering technical support. I spent a year and half answering phones, solving end users’ Mac and PC problems, and assisting Network Engineers with various network related problems. After graduating from college, a position in the Project Management Office became available. Because of my character and years of church leadership, I was able to take on a position where I would lead projects for Information Technology.
How I use my Alverno education: I use my Alverno education every day. Problem solving, analysis, and valuing are the three main abilities I use. Working with managers and directors on a daily basis, I manage our meetings to ensure all projects are running smoothly and all data recorded is accurate. I also administer Microsoft Project Server, and use problem solving skills when setting up new information for members to view.
How I define career success: Career success is knowing your goals and achieving them! Do what you are passionate about!
Tips from the field: Begin working in IT as early as possible. Get involved! The more experience the better! Don’t be afraid to make a mistake! (It happens to everyone.) The sooner you work and become engaged in a Network environment, the easier and more practical your classes will be! Working on computers for friends and such is a completely different ball game than working with computers on a large Network! Lastly… You will NEVER know everything! Be open to learning. Be a continual learner! Technology changes constantly.
