What are some general tips for using search tools?

Here are some general tips that will help you make your web searching more effective!
  • Make sure the Web is the best choice for the information you need! (for example if you need a journal or newspaper article for a class paper, use a library database and not the Web. Library Databases are located at: http://depts.alverno.edu/library/dbsubject.html)

  • Identify your search topic including its key concepts BEFORE you go online…jot down a few good search terms for each concept

  • HELP – Remember it is very useful to utilize the HELP buttons that each search tool offers. Often the few minutes it takes to review the help suggestions can greatly improve your capabilities to use the search tool.

  • Try out multiple sites when you are investigating a topic. Search tools vary a lot in terms of their contents, features, accuracy, quality, etc.

  • To find more specific items, use multiple terms rather than a single search term

  • To help avoid getting sidetracked on the Web, always keep in mind what information you are looking for….and to avoid getting lost….ask yourself from time to time: Where am I? How did I get here? What am I looking for?

  • Always check your spelling

  • If your results are not satisfactory, repeat the search using alternative terms.

  • Use different sources to diversify your results
