Decentral Reviewers
There are two categories of decentral reviewers supporting exempt reviews at Alverno.
• RRC Decentral Reviewers
• IRB Direct-Certified Decentral Reviewers
All decentral reviewers affirm that they will refrain from participating in exempt determinations when they may have a conflict of interest.
RRC Decentral Reviewers, as their name implies, make determinations for exempt requests in the context of a particular Research Review Committee. These reviewers are assigned and receive School specific training by the Research Review Committee.
IRB Direct-Certified Decentral Reviewers make exempt determinations outside of the context of one of Alverno’s RRCs. These include the following:
- exempt determinations where no appropriate RRC exists
- exempt determinations using the Streamlined Alverno Educator Request for Educational Research Exemption
- exempt determinations for research proposed by researchers not affiliated with Alverno College (external researchers)
- a waiver or altering of Informal Consent and/or its documentation is required
The following Alverno Affiliated individuals are IRB Direct-Certified Decentral Reviewers
- Donna Engelmann (Acting IRB Chair)
- Catherine Knuteson
- Paul Smith (IRB Chair on sabbatical)
- Glen Rogers (IRB Administrator)
RESEARCH REVIEW COMMITTEE: A standing committee at Alverno delegated by the Alverno IRB to conduct determinations of exemption of research from IRB review. When located within a School at Alverno (e.g., School of Nursing), the Committee also ensures that student research conforms to the School’s educational policy for protecting human subjects. {Alverno}
