- The Berkeley/Penn Urban and Environmental Modeler’s Datakit
This web site consists of a series of viewable and downloadable ESRI shapefiles and grids describing
many of the physical, administrative, transportation, demographic, economic, land use and land cover,
and environmental characteristics of the 48 contiguous United States. These data are provided free of
charge to all interested parties. The data were obtained from a variety of federal public domain sources,
including the U.S. Geologic Survey, the Census Bureau, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S.
Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agency, and
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

- City of Milwaukee Map Data (ESRI Shapefiles)
This site makes available a variety of shapefiles with city of Milwaukee data, including aldermanic
districts, the city of Milwaukee corporate boundary, Milwaukee neighborhoods, parcel boundaries,

- Digital Watershed
The digital watershed website is designed to provide both a centralized information repository
and an online computing center for watersheds in the United States. This site is based on the
comprehensive database of 8-digit watersheds for the whole continent of the United States,
which is included in the EPA BASINS system. The database contains all regulated facilities,
river network, DEM, state soil and other data layers.

- Global Distribution of Poverty
This site hosts the Global Poverty Mapping Project, which "seeks to enhance current understanding
of the global distribution of poverty and the geographic and biophysical conditions of where
the poor live." Provides data in a variety of ways that will appeal to an array of learners and
researchers interested in obtaining and using information about poverty, food security, and inequality.

- Illinois Natural Resources Geospatial Data Clearinghouse
This site provides access to Illinois GIS data sets and documentation (metadata) for ArcIMS
Interactive Map Services, USGS digital topographic maps, aerial photography, orthoimagery,
orthophotography, geology, land use, natural resources, and infrastructure. Illinois data sets
and map data layers are available for download free of charge.

A U.S. Department of Agriculture site that allows users to determine where soil tabular and

A clearinghouse effort in Wisconsin maintained by the Wisconsin State Cartographer's Office.

Software developed by Microsoft that takes a large collection of photos of a place or an object, analyzes them
for similarities, and displays them in a reconstructed three-dimensional space. Features include viewing images
from any angle, zooming in and out, search capability for finding similar images and the ability to send image

- ShowUSA
Show/USA is a free Web site that generates cartograms that give various states prominence based on thematic characteristics rather than geography or physical size. For example, Show/USA uses graphics to grow and shrink state sizes to represent the states with the most immigrants, greatest oil reserves, or highest cheese production. A helpful classroom tool for illustrating concepts and demonstrating uses of data.
