INTERLIBRARY LOAN FAQs

What? Who? How? How Many? Time? Pickup? Returns?

What? The purpose of Interlibrary Loan is to provide access for our patrons to materials not found in the Alverno Library, and as a resource for materials from our collection to all eligible requesting libraries. Interlibrary Loan is considered an adjunct to, not a substitute for, the Alverno collection. Only materials not included in the Alverno Library and the other SWITCH libraries (Cardinal Stritch, Concordia, MIAD, Mount Mary, Sacred Heart, Saint Francis Seminary, and Wisconsin Lutheran) may be requested. An exception is made if the Alverno Library and/or SWITCH item is determined lost. Missing material will be tracked before an Interlibrary borrowing request is made. For items in circulation, patrons are urged to have material recalled (if overdue) or place a hold on the material.

A loan or copy of any kind of library material may be requested on Interlibrary Loan as long as it is in accordance with the policy of the lending institution.

Who? Students, faculty/staff, alumnae and courtesy card holders are eligible for borrowing privileges from Interlibrary Loan services. Requests must be submitted via a completed ILL request form.

How? An Alverno request form must be completed at the Reference Desk and submitted to the Reference Librarian on duty, or through the Alverno InterLibrary Loan Online Request Form . The patron must record their Alverno College Library barcode number in the upper right-hand corner of the request form. The patron is also asked to note his/her address and both daytime and evening telephone numbers. E-mail addresses are optional if the patron wishes to be contacted in this manner. The patron is also asked if TOPCAT holdings have been checked before submitting the request. The Reference Librarian will initial and date the request form. Due to copyright laws, photocopies will not be faxed to individuals. All requests must be picked up at the Circulation Desk.

How Many? There is a maximum of five requests per patron in process at one time. Since filling out forms is vulnerable to omissions, it is essential to indicate explicit information for identifying and locating requested items such as AUTHOR, TITLE, DATE, NUMBERS, PAGES, etc., with the CITATION (source) of the request. A copy of the bibliographic citation from a computer search, InfoTrac, or WISCAT is preferred. The Reference Librarian on duty will photocopy the citation from the computer search at the Library's expense. REQUESTS SHOULD BE LEGIBLY PRINTED.

Time? The average time needed for a loan or photocopy transaction is 7 - 10 days. Loan periods for materials obtained will be set at the discretion of the lending institution.

Pickup? Notices of arrival for students, alumnae and courtesy card holders is by means of choice: phone or E-mail. The materials may be picked up and paid for at the Library Circulation Desk. Arrivals for faculty/staff are placed in their mail drawers.

Returns? Materials on loan will always bear the DATE DUE. Returns should be made at the Circulation Desk. Overdue materials are subject to the lending institution's fine policy.
