  • Google Scholar
A subset of Google, Google Scholar provides access to scholarly journal citations from a wide range of subject areas, with the strongest coverage in science & technology. Google Scholar is not valued as a repository for free full text articles, because many items are not available in full text. The real value of this site is its citation index – a handy research tool that allows users to easily establish which documents cite a particular research article. It is an excellent tool for verifying citations and locating similar articles. To access the citation index, look for the “cited by” link. Please check with an Alverno reference librarian BEFORE paying for an article. Note: Google Scholar is still in development and may have some inconsistencies.

  • How Stuff Works
Created by Marshall Brain and targeted towards a general audience, this site offers a wealth of information explaining how different things work. Learn anything from how a cell phone or an air conditioner works to how a power grid, hurricane, a clock or how dental school works. Some explanations are more technical than others.

  • Public Agenda
Public Agenda was founded in 1975 and is a “nonpartisan opinion research and civic engagement organization helping Americans explore and understand critical issues.” The Web site contains much original research that is well organized and easy to navigate. Public Agenda’s reports provide important additional research material for both students and faculty on a broad range of topics in the social sciences.
