Alverno College Management Accounting Major

Alverno CollegeThe two most critical work activities for management accountants today are strategic planning and process improvement. Neither is taught extensively in accounting curricula. As accounting educators we must be sure that our students acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to perform these and other key activities.

In a 1999 survey conducted by the IMA, respondents were asked how they would describe, to undergraduate accounting majors, the skills and competencies necessary for success. They singled out the following skills:

  • Communication (oral, written, and presentation) skills;
  • Ability to work on a team;
  • Analytical skills;
  • Solid understanding of accounting; and
  • Understanding of how a business functions

The Management Accounting Major Outcomes that guide your learning focus on four areas of professional performance that describe what you as a graduate will be able to do when you graduate:

  • Analytical Thinking and Action Integrates principles from accounting and management theory with liberal arts learning to interpret and analyze business situations and to effectively communicate with others in a variety of contexts.

  • Cooperative Organizational Thinking and Action Using accounting frameworks to initiate and implement problem solving and process improvement in organizational contexts.

  • Developing Others and Perspective Taking Uses management theory to interact effectively in professional contexts that require leadership of groups or other types of interpersonal interactions.

  • Developing Self and Acting with Integrity Responds to management and accounting issues in a manner consistent with personal and professional codes of conduct.
