STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

1. You are expected to participate in each lecture and discussion or laboratory class (2 lectures and 2 two-hour laboratory periods per week) to develop in the course.

   Please be aware of the following:

   • If you miss two (2) lecture/discussion and one (1) laboratory period, you must make an appointment with the instructor prior to continuing the course.

   • This may result in your being dropped from the course. The course is so structured around the laboratory, that each experience builds on the previous experience.

2. You, as an active learner, are asked to:
   • read and study the assigned sections in the text;

   • read additional handouts and prepare for your small group work by writing out answers to concept and applied questions;

   • be able to discuss and interpret microbial concepts;

   • use the available CD ROMS and Multimedia packages;

3. Before each laboratory session, you are asked to:
   • create a flowchart or map organizing your approach to the laboratory experience;

   • discuss the biological principles involved in the laboratory experimentation and make connections to the class discussion.

4. At each laboratory session, you are asked to:
   • contribute effectively to achieving the goals of the laboratory;

   • take careful data and share the data with your group; participate in every laboratory session (This is a course requirement.);

   • complete your laboratory reports which must be handed in one week after doing the laboratory work.

   Late reports are not acceptable and will be recorded as unsatifactory performance.

5. You are asked to demonstrate mastery of laboratory skills and techniques always keeping in mind SAFETY.

6. Independently, you will identify an unknown organism and either with your partner or alone, design and implement an Investigative Learning Laboratory Experience.
