GOALS OF THE COURSE: MICROBIAL ECOLOGY

GOAL 1: You will develop your analytical and synthesis skills in

studying the broad field of microbial ecology

  • by completing assigned readings
  • by viewing videos and CD-ROMs

GOAL 2: You will apply the framework of microbial ecology to

specific biology careers or professional fields

by doing in-depth research on a selected area of microbial ecology

  • by creating a twenty minute media presentation for your audience
  • by self assessing your videotaped presentation

GOAL 3: You will further refine your laboratory skills in

microbial ecology

  • by analyzing what classical methods contribute to our understanding
  • by analyzing what molecular methods contribute to our understanding
  • by learning several appropriate methods for testing communities of the microbial world
  • by designing, conducting, and communicating an in-depth microbial ecological study
